Coaching Elementary Students to Ask Thoughtful Questions
These five activities can help students learn how to ask the kinds of questions that will unlock deeper learning.

One of those questions in my elementary classroom was always “Is this right?” While it is a question, it isn’t really one that helps students dig deeper into the content or one that gets them excited to learn more. I wanted to help my students build their ability to ask better questions, and just like with all the other skills I hoped to help my students build, they needed opportunities to practice effective inquiry.
Over time, I found five activities that helped my students learn how to generate more effective questions, setting them up for deeper engagement and understanding of content.
5 ACTIVITIES TO HELP STUDENTS ASK BETTER QUESTIONS
The following activities help students move beyond simple questions and toward deeper thinking, giving them opportunities to challenge ideas, make connections, and take greater ownership of their learning.
1. Start with question storming instead of brainstorming. Most brainstorming sessions focus on generating ideas. Question storming flips that process by asking students to generate only questions.
To start a question storm, I would present students with a topic, photograph, artifact, science demonstration, historical event, or unfamiliar object, and then set a timer for three to five minutes. During that time, I tasked students with writing as many questions as possible without trying to answer any of them. This activity helps students get in the habit of letting their curiosity lead and generating questions without judgment: Students don’t discuss their questions while they are being generated.
In one example, I saw the power of this activity when I showed my fourth-grade students a photograph of a capybara without any background information. Their only task was to write down every question that came to mind.
Within the five minutes, their questions shifted from “What is this?” to wonderings about how the animal lived and survived: “Why is it so big? Is it related to a guinea pig? Can it swim? Does it have predators? Could it be a pet?”
Once the timer was up, I would invite students to share out any of the questions they wanted to and then would collect all of the papers. All of these student questions could then be used to launch inquiry projects, research assignments, or class discussions in later lessons.
2. Build a “Notice, Wonder, Investigate” routine. One of the easiest ways to strengthen student inquiry is by slowing down observation. Rather than immediately explaining new concepts, I shifted to presenting students with something interesting to examine, such as a graph, natural object, or short video clip. Then, I asked students to record three things they noticed before writing anything they wondered about.
This simple separation helped students slow down their thinking. Instead of rushing to an answer, they learned to look closely, gather information, and let questions guide their next steps. We would then move into the investigation part of our lesson and specifically aim to address the questions that students had posed.
This routine became a favorite in my classroom because there was no single right answer. Most students noticed something different, which naturally led to different questions and richer classroom conversations.
3. Play 20 Questions. Sometimes the best inquiry practice feels like a game. In my sixth-grade classroom, students were always excited to play 20 Questions. To play, one student secretly chooses a person, place, object, or animal while the rest of the group works together to identify it by asking up to 20 yes-or-no questions. This game helps support students in asking better questions because it teaches them the valuable skills of asking increasingly precise questions.
At first, students often wasted questions on details that revealed very little: “Is it blue?” or “Does it have toenails?”
As they gained experience, their questions became far more strategic: "Is it living?" or "Is it something made by people?" or "Would you typically find it indoors?"
They quickly realized that broad questions narrowed possibilities much faster than random guesses.
After each game, we reflected on which questions were most helpful and why. Students began recognizing that the quality of a question often mattered more than the number of questions they asked.
4. Challenge students to improve their questions. Many students will just ask the first question that comes to mind and then stop thinking of more things they’d like to know. I found that by giving students opportunities to revise their questions, they learned how to craft more effective questions.
I would start with a simple question such as "Where is Brazil?" and then challenge my students to turn it into a question that would lead to investigation as opposed to one single, easy-to-find answer. For example, they might revise it to "How does Brazil’s location affect its climate?" or "Why do so many people live near Brazil's coastline?" or "How might life in Brazil be different from life where we live?"
We would then reflect as a whole class on what made the revised questions stronger, noting that these deeper questions allowed the students to explore relationships, make comparisons, and consider different possibilities.
5. End lessons with questions instead of answers. Many lessons end with students sharing what they learned, but some of the most valuable thinking can come from what they are still wondering.
I started asking students to write one question they still had or one thing they would like to investigate further at the end of each lesson. This process helped students practice asking the kinds of questions that could lead to future learning and also provided me with valuable insight into their thinking.
At the end of a lesson on ecosystems, one student wondered why certain animals could survive in some environments but not others. That question became the starting point for a deeper investigation into animal adaptations and habitats.
Students won’t automatically begin asking thoughtful questions simply because we encourage curiosity. Like any academic skill, student inquiry develops through repeated opportunities to practice.
The more students engage in activities that reward wondering instead of rushing toward answers, the more naturally they begin approaching learning with curiosity, leading them to be more engaged and better equipped to explore complicated content.
