Pam Moran

Superintendent, Albemarle County Public Schools

Education is the most important profession on earth. Civilization advances because of educated people who create, design, build, engineer, idea-make, invent and so much more. Humans learn through play, story-telling, movement, image-creation, discussion, modeling, and apprenticeship. Exploration, inquiry, and discovery - fueled by innate curiosity - are all pathways for learning.

As a superintendent, I am privileged to work with educators who collaborate to create learning pathways as they shift from a 20th century factory "cells and bells" model to contemporary practices and spaces for learning. In their work, educators sustain the curiosity of young people, also supporting their development of empathy, learning agency and voice as they develop the competencies of lifelong learning. Maker approach, interactive technologies, connectivity, choice and comfort, project/problem/project based learning, universal design for learning, and instructional tolerance - are all pathways to transforming the user experience of learners in our schools.
