Mark D. Benigni

Dr. Mark Benigni has led the Meriden Public Schools to increased student growth through collaboration and innovation. Now in his seventh year as superintendent, the innovations include: student-centered learning environments, extended-day schools, a BYOD and 1:1 device initiative, and a STARS Program for students with autism. Mark was recognized as a 2015 Education Week Leaders to Learn From and in 2016 the Meriden Public Schools was a recipient of a National School Boards Association Magna Award, as well as recognition as a District of Distinction from District Administration. Superintendent Benigni began his career as a special education teacher and also served as an assistant principal, high school principal, and over six years as Mayor of Meriden. He has presented at state and national conferences and has taught doctorate level educational leadership classes. Dr. Benigni has published numerous articles, including: “The Inspirational Leader" and "Technology in the Classroom and Beyond". Rowman and Littlefield, Education Division, published his first book, Mentoring Matters: A Toolkit for Organizing and Operating Student Advisory Programs. In 2008, Dr. Benigni was a recipient of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans award by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Benigni is currently the co-chair of the Connecticut Association of Urban Superintendents and he is also a member of the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents Board of Directors. Mark is a father of two school-aged children who attend Meriden Public Schools.
