Brooke MacKenzie
Reading Specialist
Brooke MacKenzie is the founder of Achieving Reading, a private tutoring practice specializing in building reading, writing, and study skills for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. She loves all things literacy, and in her spare time can usually be found either reading or writing. She has a master’s degree in language and literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Brooke started her teaching career as a Teach For America corps member, and she was a regional semifinalist for the Sue Lehmann Award for Excellence in Teaching. She taught kindergarten, first, and second grades in public and charter schools before making the transition to learning specialist. She also spent two years in Bangkok creating the curriculum for an international school’s preschool program.
Her education-related writing has appeared in Literacy Today, Teacher Magazine, Independent School Magazine, and Ed: The Magazine of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She also writes horror fiction, and her story “The Elevator Game” appeared in Who Knocks? Magazine. She lives in New York City with her husband, and has recently finished writing a collection of short horror stories, as well as a memoir.
