9 Evidence-Based Ways to Improve Your Instructions

You turn to classic questions like, “Do you understand?” or resort to repeating the instructions again, perhaps a little slower and with more emphasis this time. Still, nothing changes.
That’s a natural progression, according to a 2026 study, which finds that teachers tend to “overestimate the clarity of their explanations” and fall back on less-effective strategies like repetition, reassurance, or raising their voices when students are confused.
Good instruction-giving (IG) refers to a broad array of verbal and nonverbal moves teachers use to guide kids through tasks, transitions, and activities—practices like explaining an activity and its purpose clearly and concisely, or using demonstrations, models, and gestures to show students what they should be doing. Despite the importance of these skills, the researchers note, most teachers never receive formal training in them.
“New teachers might assume that it is a skill that will be naturally mastered,” writes researcher Jimalee Sowell in a 2017 study on IG. “More experienced teachers might assume that it is a skill they have already mastered.”
While slip-ups are normal, Sowell says that delivering effective instructions isn’t a skill teachers should wait to develop with experience: “Instruction-giving has a direct effect on learning; a lesson or activity becomes chaotic and fails when students do not understand what they are supposed to do.”
Training is proven to help, too: In the 2026 study, pre-service teachers were given guided IG training focused on best practices like breaking instructions into manageable steps, checking for understanding, and modeling what they’re looking for in final products.
Post-training, teachers delivered clearer instructions, sequenced tasks more effectively, and responded faster to student confusion.
Here are nine evidence-backed ways to improve how you deliver instructions in your classroom.
1. Reverse the Curse: A common issue for teachers giving instructions is that they’re often “not as clear to their students as they are to themselves,” Sowell writes. This is connected to the “curse of knowledge,” or the tendency for experts to forget what it feels like not to know something.
- Write out your instructions ahead of time and audit them for unfamiliar words, jargon, or references to concepts that require advanced understanding.
- Ask yourself: If I were hearing this for the first time, what would be unclear?
2. Prepare with Care: IG is often treated as something improvised in the moment, but Sowell notes that effective instructions are frequently planned, rehearsed, and refined before students ever enter the room.
- Rehearse the delivery of your instructions, recording audio or video to flag areas for improvement.
- Ask for feedback on your instructions from more experienced colleagues.
- Consider whether you need any visual or multimedia aids—such as pictures, videos, demonstrations, or slides—to accompany your instructions.
3. Get Students’ Attention First: An easy way for instructions to become muddled is for teachers to deliver them before students are ready to listen. Teachers in the 2026 study found more success delivering instructions when they first secured students’ attention using simple attention-getting routines.
- Pause and wait for full attention before beginning instructions.
- Use a call-and-response routine—a clapping pattern students repeat back, or a raised hand they mirror—and wait until the room settles before speaking.
- Try consistent verbal cues like “Eyes on me” or “Track the speaker.”
- Ring a bell, chime, or other sound that signals students should prepare to listen.
4. Be Short, Concrete, and Specific: Many inexperienced teachers unintentionally overload students with lengthy directions full of deferential phrasing ("could you do this?") or vague prompts ("talk to your partner") that leave students unsure how to proceed.
In the 2026 study, teachers who used shorter, direct language found more success. Instead of "So now we're going to take our potato, which we looked at earlier, and then after that cut the potato in half…,” they said: "Cut the potato in half." Instead of "Discuss this with your group," they said "Ask three classmates the question on the board and record their answers."
Other principles to consider:
- Write one sentence per directive, using simple and familiar language students can easily remember.
- Avoid indirect phrasing that softens directions—"could you do this?" is harder to follow than "do this."
- Replace vague prompts like "discuss this" or "analyze the text" with specific actions like "tell your partner what motivated this character" or "identify the moment the conflict shifts.”
5. Do Deeper Checks for Understanding: Asking “do you understand?” is a classic mistake, according to the research, since students will often simply remain silent or shake their heads in doubtful confirmation.
Researchers encourage teachers to use more specific "concept-checking" questions to better surface—and address—confusion before students dive into a task. Questions like: “Ok, so tell me: Who will you interview first?” or “How many animals will you identify in this step?” get students to verbalize their thinking and reveal misconceptions early.
- Watch for signs of uncertainty, especially during transitions and multi-step tasks.
- Replace "Does everyone understand?" with concrete follow-up questions like "What's your first step?"
- Use a quick turn-and-talk to let students surface confusion with a peer before sharing questions they have with the larger group.
- Consider asking students to walk you through the task in their own words; you can do this as a group activity and correct misconceptions as you go.
6. Break Complex Instructions Into Steps: New teachers tend to deliver instructions in one long stream, researchers note—“wash the herbs, cut them, put them in the bowl, and then…”—which forces students to hold too many steps in working memory. Slow down, they caution, and break complex tasks into smaller, well-planned steps: “First wash the herbs. Then cut them.”
- Avoid giving students more information than they need to get started.
- Pause between directions to make sure students complete the step—or fully understand it—and are ready for the next step.
- Organize for complexity: Move from simpler tasks into more cognitively demanding ones.
- Use transition phrases like “First,” “Next,” and “Finally” to signal progression.
7. Model, Model, Model: Students are far more likely to understand and complete tasks when teachers model what a process or finished product should look like.
Pairing verbal instructions with visual, written, and gestural supports can help reduce the “cognitive effort” students need to begin an activity—and free them to focus more fully on the learning itself.
- Demonstrate complex activities before students get started—walk through each step slowly, whether that means thinking out loud through a problem, annotating a text in real time, or showing students what a strong first move looks like.
- Supplement verbal directions with prepared visuals—diagrams, sketches, photos of the finished product, or examples students can refer back to.
- During multi-step activities, consider posting visual reminders or written instructions so students don’t have to rely on memory alone for next steps.
- Assign a student to model the instructions you’ve just given—Neurologist Judy Willis suggests peers can make instructions more vivid and memorable.
8. Circulate and Repair: Sowell notes that instruction-giving does not end once directions are delivered. Effective teachers continue monitoring students as they begin work, looking for hesitation, confusion, or signs that the task itself remains unclear.
“Throughout an activity, periodically monitor students and make yourself readily available for assistance,” she writes. Students should know “you are present and involved in what they are doing.”

- If most of the class is off track, stop and re-address the whole group. If it's just a few students, work with them individually or in their groups.
- When you spot confusion, step in with a light touch—a word of reassurance, a quick clarification, or a simple redirect like "back up and tell me where you got stuck."
- Treat confusion as feedback, not failure—“with patience and a thoughtful approach, you can usually find a way to get students on track,” Sowell writes.
9. Audit Your Work: Instruction-giving isn't a fixed trait; it's a skill that improves with practice and reflection. Researchers recommend note-taking, lesson recording, peer observations, and rubrics as ways to keep developing. Many teachers, they note, don't realize how “unclear, rushed, or overly complex” their instructions are until they examine their own teaching closely.
Further research shows that the highest-performing teachers tend to regularly solicit feedback from peers and students to find out what's working and what isn't.
- Occasionally record yourself in real-classroom instruction-giving occasionally.
- Ask a colleague to observe and give feedback on how you deliver directions.
- Notice where students consistently get stuck or ask follow-up questions—that's usually a sign the instructions need improvement.
